"APOSTLE Mike Neville...intentionally wished to brainwash all of us." (9 replies)

Dear brothers and sisters,
I am sorry for all the wrongs which you have suffered and none of them surprise me. First, I would like to say that APOSTLE Mike Neville who founded Praise Chapel though never properly call so, had clearly stated over the pulpit in front of God and the congregation and it was recorded and sold on tape cassette as well that he intentionally wished to brainwash all of us. He explained that he wanted us to be too busy to become idle as in idle hands are the devil's playground. He wanted us to be at church all the time and influenced by other believers than at home or any where else where we could be influenced by unbelievers. He called TV the one-eyed demon and so I did not even own a TV. He had a vision to reach the world and he did it. Apostle Neville was a great man that I loved and respected and he fulfilled his father's business and is in Heaven with Jesus and will never suffer again.
As for all the sin and corruption from leadership; it's ALL of our faults. We all have bibles and we all have the duty to "study to shew ourselves approved unto God". WE have and had the responsibility to address any issues that conflict with scripture by following scriptural guidelines. Confront the individual(pastor or whoever) alone. If they won't repent, then you grab some elders in the church and confront them. If they still don't repent, then you take it to the church(body) and if they still won't repent then the body needs to kick them out. And if the church is in sin and won't kick out the pastor or whatever individual then WE need to leave that church and shake the dust off our shoes and go find another church that is obeying God's Word.
Now we've all been hurt by people in the church and we cannot use that as an excuse to stop serving Jesus. On the judgement day that line "so and so did me wrong" will not fly as you will be cast into the lake of fire for eternity.
Lastly, scripture instructs us that WE OUGHT TO OBEY GOD RATHER THAN MAN. Apostle Neville also stated over the pulpit that if you don't like the church, there's the door. So if you don't want to continue in sin, then you need to leave that church, because if you continue in what you know is wrong, it is sin unto you. So here I would like to bring to light a subject that most PC'ers ignore. "HOUSE CHURCH"
Rather than complaining and luking out or backsliding over what's going on inside the commercial buildings; go home and start your own church in your own house. I know that seems crazy and un-traditional, and that's exactly what house church is . . . . . it's not traditions of man. We most likely got saved in a commercial building and had church in that commercial building for years. That was the tradition passed down to us and we ignorantly followed it.
Luke 5: 19 shows us that Jesus had church in a believer's house. Acts 2 says that the promised gift of the Holy Spirit was first ushered in from the upper room of a believer's home. Paul the apostle who wrote the majority of the NT had church in his house as a pastor while also being an apostle over all the other house churches in Acts 28: 30-31. Philemon 2 states church in their house as well as many other NT references to house churches. When Paul the apostle wrote letters to the church in whatever city; he was not writing a letter to a synagogue, or a temple, or a commercial building, but he was writing to a group of house churches scattered throughout that city which was most likely overseen by a bishop(a lost position in the church today which needs to be reinstated).
Furthermore, God told his people in 1 Chronicles 17:5 that he does NOT want buildings. He wants to be with us in our homes(tents) where we live daily. If Jesus were to step inside these commercial church buildings today with their business names, logos, and slogans, business permits, reseller permits, articles of incorporation, corporate board of directors, 501c3 tax exemptions which are compromises with Cesar, business insurance, business checking accounts, business accountants, and of course their servitude to mammon which is a business's "bottom line" in order to stay in business......Jesus would make a whip, kick over the pulpit, whip the pastor and board of directors, go into the church office and make it look like a tornado hit it. Then he'd climb onto the roof and knock off the church name sign and graffitti the word ICHABOD in it's place with a can of spray paint because they have turned his house of prayer into a den of thieves. The pastors have become hirelings addicted to that corporate paycheck. Which is why Paul the apostle was a tent maker by profession for the very sake that he could not be accused of being a hireling nor be tempted by the money flow.
Jesus told us that where ever 2 or 3 are gathered together in his name, there he is with us. So just 2 or 3 believers can be a church. Then as God gives the increase from our sewing and watering, then Jesus will fill in the offices which he gave us in Ephesians 4 such as evangelists, pastors, teachers, deacons, presbytery, and so on. So if and when you decide to leave those four walls and start a church in your own home, beware of the elder doctrine which has drowned out the house church movement. They claim everyone is either a babe in Christ or an elder. Along with that they claim to be democratic where every one is equal as a form of christian communism though in practice they do the opposite. They reject in whole the leadership titles and roles which Jesus gave us in Ephesians 4. They have thrown out the baby with the bath water because they were wronged by a commercial church pastor.
With that said, all of us will have a line put in front of us by Cesar. The public commercial churches will soon be subject to Cesar's new world order and dictates which conflict with scripture. Choose you this day whom you will serve! Stay in Cesar's den of thieves or go into your homes and start your own church

Hi everyone,

I posted sometime ago about my experiences about this church. I attended when I was a child and it left me with some bitterness against the church. Thankfully, I'm all over it now and I have a happy life. I want to thank you for posting this and allowing people to post their experiences. I'm sure a lot of other posters feel a huge weight has been lifted off their shoulders, so well done.

I would really love to share my name on this forum, see if anyone remembers me. I've read a lot of other posts from people who were children at the same time I was going to this church, so we probably did know each other. Sadly, I can't do this as it would compromise my family who still attend, but it sure would be interesting.

Bye...and thanks.

Hi all. I left a church about 2 years ago that turned out to be a spiritually abusive one. It fit the characteristics as listed by Mike Fehlauer in his online article called Warning Signs of Spiritual Abuse. Once I found that article I began my research into spiritual abuse and am still just appalled that I was deceived for as long as I was. The pastor of this church was trained in Ft Worth at Calvary Cathedral which is led by Bob Nichols. I have found no connection between spiritual abuse and this church anywhere online, but I know they have "sent out" at least one other pastor to Canada where this guy leads a church that is notorious for being controlling and abusive. I just want to post a warning about the place in TX in case anyone else might be wondering. I have also posted a list of characteristics of abusive churches at [www.squidoo.com] if anyone is interested- I'd love to get some feedback on it.

I just wanted to share my story, theres also a video at the end that you may find helpful for identifying pastors (or anyone for that matter) that are in my opinion, not spiritually mature enough to be in that position, and thats putting it lightly, but anyway, here it goes. (This is a standard explanation I made so its a little impersonal but I'm ill and don't feel good enough to write it all out again)

I attended Waipio Grace Brethren Church (hawaii) for 3 years or so and had much respect for Pastor Frank Figueroa Jr. but unfortunately I have seen changes in the way the church is run for the worse. Pastor Frank has a self admitted anger problem, an anger problem that I remember him talking about over the pulpit a number of times. I did not understand the severity of it, at least until I believe me and a member of my family got to experience it.

This situation all started when I got extremely ill (still am) and was to sick to leave the house or continue to go to church. My dad was also going to WGB, and so he asked Frank Figueroa Jr. on my request to call me because I could use some kind words and prayer.

I never received a call. My dad continued to ask Frank Figueroa Jr. to call a number of times over the next several months but I still never received a call (Frank later on said that he had called). After months of feeling ignored, I was quite confused as to why this was happening and so my Dad and Frank exchanged some emails and decided it would be good to meet and talk about it.

Eventually my Dad ended up leaving a note for him (because he could not reach him) at his residence asking Frank Figueroa Jr. to call him as soon as he could (so they could set up the meeting date). Well Frank called, and my Dad started talking about setting up the meeting, after my dad was done speaking, Frank Figueroa Jr. started yelling and accusing my dad of not ministering to his wife from years before when she was sick . My dad tried to get Frank to calm down, but he would not stop yelling and my Dad got frustrated and and got loud and hung up the phone.

Because of this, we decided to get some other elders involved to help work this out. My dad had numerous phone call conversations with the elders about the situation with Frank Figueroa Jr. on the phone and me not being ministered too. My Dad had to do this because I was too sick to talk most of the time, (I was only able to talk to Frank once).

Well, these conversations went on for a month, (and within this time they also had one meeting) and the answers we received kept changing which created other problems and questions, so my Dad tried to set up one last meeting with Frank Figueroa Jr. and the elders to get things cleared up. Frank at first agreed to have a second meeting, then refused because my Dad did not want to go back to Franks Church after all this had transpired. A week or so later he filed a temporary restraining order against me and my Dad that was filled with FALSE accusations.

He claimed my Dad and I threatened people when we did no such thing. He made these false accusations against me while I was extremely ill (still am) and was to sick to even leave the house, (but yet it seems he expected me to drive into town and go to court, luckily I did not have to but my Dad did). Not to mention, the stress he caused me by all the problems this caused me and my family made my illness and the pain worse.

The court day arrived and the TRO was dismissed after many failed attempts by Frank to accuse us in front of the Judge. I have tried to show proof to some of the elders of the church that the things Pastor Frank Figueroa Jr. said were false, and tried to tell them how very serious this situation is because these accusations where made under the penalty of perjury, but they say nothing at all and in my opinion it's very clear they do not seem to care that he was wrong, or why he was wrong.

Because of the way Frank Figueroa Jr. was acting and the way the stories were changing, me and my Dad decided to record the conversations with him and the elders for accuracy (which is legal in our state), because of this we can prove what was said and there were no threats to physically harm anyone. I have sent my recording to them, and none of them have responded nor repented to us of a single thing.

The two elders that were most involved throughout this situation were Scott and Dave . Scott ended up making things worse, which he admitted. He actually said he was no good at doing things like this and said he would stay away from the situation. However he did not keep his word and continued to inject himself into the middle of things and further confuse them.

Dave was actually asked before the TRO was filed if he wanted to hear one of the recordings, this was in regards to something Frank had denied saying which we of course had recorded. Dave said no, which to me shows that this person is not interested in the truth at all.
Frank Figueroa Jr. and the elders of Waipio Grace Brethren church have not personally shown me an ounce of sympathy or regret for the harm they did to me and I don't understand how Frank can teach the Bible honestly from the pulpit when he does things that are the very opposite of what the Bible teaches.

This man made my health worse, caused me extreme stress and pain, and no one at the church seems to want to know how Frank came to these conclusions even though they are wrong and devoid of reality. I personally believe he knew these accusations were false when he made them. I can come to no other conclusion because of there silence, there failure to apologize, and how off base the accusations were in the first place. I implore you to stay far away from this Church and anyone who is taught scripture by this man for your spiritual health.

---------------------

So that's my story, here is the video. It amazes me I was able to sit under a pastor that sounded like this, but I was sick and I guess I just wanted some friends. Also, I had not attended church in a while, this was my first one as a semi adult, and I guess I was just really ignorant. So maybe this video can help you be less ignorant (unlike me), so maybe you don't have to go through what I did.

Any advice about telling my teenage kids that their relative is in a cult? I've read articles about what cults are, warning signs, we did an intervention years ago but we're unsuccessful. They have a good relationship with her and have no idea, I think. It's very emotional for me to tell to finally tell them. Thank you.

Larry Herlong is a false prophet (no replies)

I posted some information about this man (Larry Herlong) and some of his associates (Matt Swogger and his wife Leah Swogger) under the topic Cults, sects and new religious movements, but it is actually more appropriate under this heading of "Destructive Churches". Destructive being the operative word. Larry is a self-proclaimed prophet and I heard him say numereous times that; "you know if a prophet is the real thing, if the things he says comes to pass". So one can gather that the opposite is also true. If NOTHING he says comes to pass, then he must not be the real thing. In my four years listening to him, none of his prophecies materialized. Then he would blame me (or others) for a bad attitude, or my doubt and unbelief (which he heavily contributed to) or would just say...."Well I never said when", which was often untrue and, not to mention, a total cop-out. These people did unimaginable harm to my family and I, including children, all in the name of Jesus and "biblical truth". Our eyes were eventually opened when we got some counselling from pastors and elders of a REAL church who were genuine men and women of God, without any self-serving ulterior motives. When we told them of some of the things we were told by Larry and the Swoggers, they were totally shocked that people could commit such blatant spiritual and psychological abuse and still call themselves Christians. PLEASE, if anybody out there is involved with any of them, or thinking about becoming involved.....BEWARE! If you hear/feel that little voice inside of you telling you that something just "doesn't seem right"; LISTEN TO IT! If I had, I could have saved myself so much pain, anguish and severe monetary loss. They will tell you that that little voice is just the devil lying to you because you are about to have a major breakthrough or blessing from God. Just pure manipulation and brainwashing! I hope and pray that this post will save even just one family or person from the torment we experienced. Thank you.

Apology and explanation about loss of data base files 2011-2013 (5 replies)

Members of the message board:

A few days ago, during the transition converting culteducation.com to culteducation.com, a backup failure at the ISP (Intenet Service Provider) led to the loss of two years of data base files at this message board. This included individual posts, entire threads, archived private messages, membership approvals, everything from September 2011 to August 2013.

I am deeply sorry for this system administration failure.

Everything was done in an effort to retrieve the lost files, but it has proven to be an impossible task and the files cannot be restored.

Anyone who registered from September 2011 to August 2013 will have to register again to become a current active member.

Members that received pre-approved status to post without moderation will have go through that approval process again, which will be done as soon as possible.

There are some general backup archives accessible through the Internet on the World Wide Web where some of the lost posts and information from this message board may still appear.

See [archive.org]

For example see [web.archive.org]

Searching through this Internet Archive may yield some of the lost material and information, which might then be copied and placed back into certain threads and/or used to create new threads.

This message board is now part of the Cult Education Institute online Web sites, formerly known as the Ross Institute of New Jersey.

The Cult Education Institute, which is an educational tax-exempted charity, is a member of the American Library and New Jersey Library Associations.

By changing the name of the institute and its domain address people searching for information about cults can more easily find related information here.

A great deal of work is being done now to modernize and generally update the look and functionality of the Cult Education Web sites.

Please be patient and you will see positive changes in the coming weeks.

I have been assured by the hosting system administrator at the ISP that there will be no more problems with backup.

This backup failure was an isolated event, no other such failure has ever occurred at this message board during its more than decade long history, nor at the larger archives launched in 1996.

For those that shared and cared by posting here, in the hope that you might help others with useful information, I can only say again how deeply sorry I am about the loss of files here due to the system failure.

My hope is that you will move on through this transition and continue sharing important information about destructive cults, controversial groups, movements and related topics of interest.

There are few resources online that the general public can access with such information.

This message board has played a pivotal role in informing the public by often exposing abusive groups and leaders, which has at times led and/or contributing to media reports, law enforcement and/or regulatory action.

Thank you for your concern and participation in this process.

Please continue to participate and express your concerns here.

Sincerely,

Rick Alan Ross, Executive Director

I could write a book detailing all the traumatic and horrific incidents my family and I experienced during the four years I was a member of Larry Herlong's cult. He also had a couple directly under him; Matt Swogger and his wife Leah Swogger. This is a very small, so-called Christian "Bible-based ministry" in Southern Cal. I am out of it now, thank God, but want to post this to warn people about how much harm they caused. Extremely manipulative and self-serving and would distort scripture and use verses out of context for their own self-serving purposes. They are all the very definition of "wolves in sheep's clothing".
Larry claimed to be a prophet whose every word came directly from God. He said many times: "You can tell if a prophet is the real thing, if the things he says come to pass". Well, then one can also concude that if NOTHING[u[/u]he says comes to pass (and years later still hasn't) he must NOT be the real thing! Simple logic. They would never take any responsibility or be accountable in any way when their ridiculous "prophecies" didn't materialize. They would just heap piles of blame on me/us and say its my lack of faith or doubt and unbelief, or would say "well I never said when!"
Larry and the Swoggers are very dangerous and destructive so BUYER BEWARE! Don't fall for the fake love they pretend to shower you with at first. (all this is very typical cult behavior, by the way). My eyes were finally opened when we spoke about this with some genuine men and women of God at our local church, who were shocked to hear that people who were so spiritually abusive could even call themselves Christians! Whenever I questionned or expressed doubts about what they were telling us in any way whatsoever, they would tell me that's just the devil lying to you because you're about to have a major breakthrough or receive a huge blessing! Or, would make some fear-mongering threat about what God would do to me if I didn't stop (questioning). I realize now that's another typical cult technique to control.
If anyone out there is involved with him/them, or thinking about becoming involved, and yet you hear that small voice inside telling you that something just doesn't seem right....LISTEN TO IT!!. I wish I had, I could've saved myself and family much anguish and torment, not to mention extreme financial lo$$! Thank you for taking the time to read this and it is my sincere hope and prayer that this post will spare someone(s) what we went through and are still dealing with emotionally and financially.

Pastor Sun Hui East First Love Harvest Church Strong Foundations Films (10 replies)

I am looking for information on a woman who calls herself Pastor Sun Hui East and runs a cult like church called First Love Harvest and a film company called Strong Foundations. She used to reside in Colorado and then after several lawsuits brought on her by former church members she picked up her entire group of followers and they moved to San Antonio Texas. I have been researching her group for several months now as I believe she is now using her "movie company" to recruit young hopeful actors into her cult. I have interviewed several past members who finally got out of this cult and most were left destitute and with no friends or family because of the extreme isolation this group forced on the members and the pressure to leave their former lives for fear they were living in sin. I would appreciate any and all information anyone might have concerning this person as one of the members of my personal family is currently involved and not speaking to any other members of our family due to the brainwashing of this group. I know this group is on several cult watch lists and have been for many years. My family member lives in extreme fear and is convinced that this woman they follow is a modern day prophet as she controls the group with prophecy and predictions about word events, personal details about their pasts, and warnings about their futures. She tells her followers who they can marry, where they can work (most of them work for her) and who they can be friends with. If anyone out there has any further information that might help me save my family member I would really appreciate it.
